Planning your company holiday calendar for 2027? This guide gives you the complete India public holidays list for 2027 — the national and gazetted holidays notified in the DoPT Office Memorandum dated 16 July 2026, plus the state holidays most commonly observed by IT companies in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Delhi NCR.

At the end, you will find a step-by-step guide to adding your 2027 holiday calendar to TrackPM — where admins set up the company holiday list themselves, giving you full control over which holidays your team observes.

National Holidays India 2027 — 3 Mandatory Holidays

Three national holidays are compulsory for every establishment in India under each state's National and Festival Holidays Act and Shops and Establishments Act. An employee who works on one of these days must be compensated — with double wages, or a day's wages plus a compensatory off, depending on your state's rules.

DateDayHoliday
26 January 2027TuesdayRepublic Day
15 August 2027SundayIndependence Day
2 October 2027SaturdayMahatma Gandhi Jayanti

Note for 2027: Both Independence Day (15 August) and Gandhi Jayanti (2 October) fall on weekends. The DoPT does not give central government offices a substitute day when a holiday falls on a weekend, and for private companies a substitute is a policy choice, not a legal requirement. Many IT companies still give the following Monday off — if you do, add the substitute date to your leave system yourself.

Central Gazetted Holidays India 2027 — Full DoPT List

The DoPT Office Memorandum of 16 July 2026 notified these 17 gazetted holidays for central government offices in Delhi / New Delhi. Private establishments choose which of them to observe — most Indian IT companies settle on 14–18 holidays in total, combining national, gazetted and company-specific days.

Commonly Observed State Holidays — Reference List for IT Companies

Indian IT companies with offices in several cities usually add state-specific holidays based on where their employees work. Here are the holidays most commonly observed in each major IT city — use them as a reference when building your 2027 list, and confirm exact dates against your state government's notification.

Kannada Rajyotsava (1 November) is the most important Karnataka-specific holiday and is observed almost universally by Bengaluru IT companies.

Delhi NCR (Delhi, Noida, Gurugram)

Most Delhi NCR IT companies follow the central DoPT list, with Holi (23 March) and Janmashtami (25 August) as the most common picks. Noida follows Uttar Pradesh rules and Gurugram follows Haryana — confirm the notification for your state separately.

2027 Weekend Holidays — Substitute Day Planning

Six of the 17 gazetted holidays fall on a Saturday or Sunday in 2027 — Independence Day and Id-e-Milad share Sunday 15 August. If your company gives substitute days, these are the usual choices:

HolidayDateFalls onCommon substitute
Independence Day15 Aug 2027SundayMonday 16 August
Gandhi Jayanti2 Oct 2027SaturdayMonday 4 October
Dussehra9 Oct 2027SaturdayMonday 11 October
Guru Nanak Jayanti14 Nov 2027SundayMonday 15 November
Christmas25 Dec 2027SaturdayMonday 27 December

Whatever you decide, write the substitute-day policy down and share it before 1 January 2027. Central government offices get no substitute days, and for private companies it is a policy decision — so employees should not have to guess whether a weekend holiday "moves" to Monday.

Comp Off vs Holiday — When Employees Work on Public Holidays in 2027

When an employee works on a national or festival holiday, they are entitled to either:

  • Double wages for that day, or
  • One day's wages plus a compensatory off day

Which one applies depends on your state's Shops and Establishments Act or National and Festival Holidays Act. For IT companies where project delivery sometimes requires holiday work: approve it in writing before the holiday, record the arrangement, and settle the comp off or double wage in the next payroll run. TrackPM's comp off tracking keeps the balance once the admin records the grant. For the full rules, see our guide to comp off rules in India.

How to Add Your 2027 Holiday Calendar in TrackPM

TrackPM's Holiday Management gives admins one company holiday calendar that every employee can see. You add the holidays yourself — there is no automatic state-wise preset — so the calendar reflects your actual decisions about office locations, team composition and company policy, rather than a generic list that may not match your team.

Step 1 — Decide your holiday list. Use the reference lists above. For most Indian IT companies this means the 3 national holidays, 8–10 gazetted holidays relevant to your office cities, and any company-specific days — 14–16 holidays in total is the most common range.

Step 2 — Open Office → Holidays in TrackPM. Add each holiday with its name and date. If you have the whole list in a spreadsheet, save it as a CSV with reason (the holiday name) and date columns and import it in one go.

Step 3 — Add substitute days, if your policy gives them. For example: Monday 16 August, Monday 4 October, Monday 11 October, Monday 15 November and Monday 27 December.

Step 4 — Add the moon-sighting holidays as tentative. Add Eid-ul-Fitr (around 10 March), Bakrid (around 17 May), Muharram (around 16 June) and Id-e-Milad (around 15 August) with "(tentative)" in the name. When the dates are confirmed in 2027, delete the tentative entry and add the confirmed date.

Step 5 — Let your team check the calendar. Once added, every employee sees the 2027 holidays on the Holidays page, in a list and a calendar view, and can plan their earned leave around them without asking HR for dates. Pair it with TrackPM's leave management so leave requests and holidays live in the same place.

Step 6 — Add location-specific days. Bengaluru teams: add Kannada Rajyotsava (1 November). Chennai: Pongal (14–16 January) and Tamil New Year (14 April). Pune or Mumbai: Gudi Padwa (7 April) and Maharashtra Din (1 May). TrackPM places no restriction on which days you add.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many public holidays should an Indian IT company give in 2027?
Beyond the 3 national holidays (Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti), the minimum number of paid holidays is set by each state's National and Festival Holidays Act or Shops and Establishments Act, and it differs from state to state — check the rules for every state you have an office in. In practice, most Indian IT companies observe 14–18 holidays a year, combining national holidays, central gazetted holidays and the state-specific days relevant to their office locations.
How do I add public holidays in TrackPM for 2027?
In TrackPM, an admin adds holidays from Office → Holidays: enter the holiday name and date for each one, or import the whole list from a CSV file with reason and date columns. There is no automatic state-wise preset — you choose exactly which holidays your company observes. Once added, every employee can see the holiday list and calendar.
What happens when a public holiday falls on a Sunday in India in 2027?
For central government offices, nothing — the DoPT memorandum gives no substitute day when a holiday falls on a weekend. For private IT companies it is a policy choice: many give the following Monday off. In 2027 that affects Independence Day (Monday 16 August), Gandhi Jayanti (Monday 4 October), Dussehra (Monday 11 October), Guru Nanak Jayanti (Monday 15 November) and Christmas (Monday 27 December). If you give substitutes, add those Mondays as holidays in TrackPM.
Can Indian IT companies ask employees to work on public holidays?
Yes, with compensation. An employee who works on a national or festival holiday must receive either double wages for that day or one day's wages plus a compensatory off, depending on the applicable state law. Approve holiday work in writing beforehand. In TrackPM, the admin can record the comp off once the holiday work is done and approved.
When should I finalise the 2027 holiday list for my team?
Publish your 2027 company holiday calendar by 15 December 2026. That gives your team two to three weeks to plan earned leave around the holiday dates. Mark the moon-sighting holidays (Eid-ul-Fitr, Bakrid, Muharram and Id-e-Milad) as tentative and update them in 2027 once the dates are confirmed.
